SPACE
Well I sure haven't been very timely in up dating this Blog. I typed a review last week, and just as I finished it, I got a message that the Blog server had a problem and I lost the whole thing!
This Friday, April 15th, I head to Columbus OH for S.P.A.C.E., one of the top small press comic book shows in the country. I expect to return with an arm load of new comics, so I should have quite a bit to review. That is provided I can find the time to sit down at the computer and actual do it. I will be debuting my new comic NUT # 2 at the show, it is 32 pages half legal size with full color cover. It sells for $2.00 plus $1.00 postage and handling.
Did you ever wonder what handling is ?
Here is what I include in handling; The envelope, addressing the envelope, placing the comic in the envelope, licking the envelope, licking the stamp or stamps and sticking them on the envelope, the cost of gas ( now $2.28 per gallon) to drive to the post office and back, and wear and tear on my vehicle to drive to the post office and back, plus various other costs that I can't think of right now.

Here are four great little minis. The first by Matt Corrigan should be an incentive for any kids of grade school age that are interested in comics. Matt is in grade school, publishing comics, attending comic cons, and getting his work noticed. These two comics find humor in the classroom. Issue #8 has a great small press comics review section, and I hope Matt continues his reviews they are done quite well.
Tom Cherry's Cherry Flavored comics are always done well. In # 1 Grandma Bev tells a tall tale about a tall man, Abe Lincoln. Personally I think it's a true story. Nibble # 2 is kind of a silent Valentine for everyone to enjoy.

Here is a great idea, Rene offers a set of collector cards from his on-going series "Thief The Adventures of John Argent" Each card has a character on the front, and an event that has occurred in Thief on the back. This is an easy way to catch up on the continuing story. If you are already a Thief fan then you will want these for your collection.
Rene also offers the complete thief comic book collection for $15.00 and includes the cards in that price. what a deal!
The Thief story line is too long for me to get into here , but I can tell you it is one of the best small press comics out there, and Rene is an excellent illustrator. You should get into Thief, and John Argent's Adventures.

UNTAMED HIGHWAY # 1

Another long spell in between updates, this one due to phone line being down, and taking forever to get a reair man out!
Anyway back to " Untamed Highway". Just when you think everything has been done in comics, along comes this one with a fresh story idea and super art work. This is about a lodge, kind of like the Moose lodge, or the Elks. However these guys are devoted to the preservation of those roadside attractions you see as you travel across the U.S.. You know, the Elvis Musuem with every thing carved out of soap, or the Authentic Walnut Bowls, The Exotic Pet Zoo, that stuff!
The underlying story is that the lodge needs to find a guy named Barfski who stole one of their artifacts, so they hoodwink a poor slob by the name of Sydney Drake and send him off to recover the artifact. I really don't want to give away the story, and there is a lot more to it than I have indicated. Wild art work with lots of detail and action make this comic grab your interest right away.
This is a good one folks, I can't wait to see issue two

SAP # 5

Jeff admits it has been quite a while since his first issue of SAP. I think the first issue may have been published in 98 or 99. This issue , although it is numbered 5, is the follow up to issue number one. The story involves a group of friends, and of course a group of aliens who live underground. Tarrel, always looking for away to make a buck, discovers the substance called SAP that the aliens produce underground. The street value is around ten bucks, so he is in business.
The first issue of SAP had a much more involved story than this issue. Issue one is where you really get to know the characters. But as far as I can remember the substance known as sap was never mentioned in issue one. So I never understood until now, what the title had to do with the comic.
Jeffs art work is full of great detail, texture , and wonderful cross-hatching. His figures will remind you of Peter Baage. In my opinion he does not copy Baage, but just continues in the style that Baage uses. Jeff is a St. Louis cartoonist, and part of the Catastrophe Comix Group. Other members of that group are Ted May, Dan Zettwoch, and Kevin Huizenga. As a cartoonist Jeff may very well be the most talented of the group.
When you order a copy of SAP # 5, you really should ask for a copy of SAP #1 also.

FUTURISTIC TOASTERS

For a year or two whenever anyone purchased, or traded for a billy mckay comic, he would ask them to send him a drawing or an idea for a futuristic toaster. Well billy has collected all those drawings,and published them. Included are some names you may recognize like, Jeff Plotkin, Bruce Orr,Joeman, Tea Krulos, Chad Woody. And there are a number of other artists represented, not as well known, at least by me.
Of course just like everything billy does, this turns out to be a lot of fun and well worth the price!
Oh and by the way, look for me in there too!

KING CAT COMICS & STORIES #'S 62 & 63

If you have never experienced a John Porcellino comic, think of comics that are paired down to the simplest form possible, just short of stickmen. But please do not think that these are hurried scribbles. On the contrary, I am sure John puts a great deal of thought into each panel. He would have to in order for these comics to work. And with issue 63, John celebrates his 15th year of doing King-Cat. That's about four comics a year! Congratulations John!
Issue 62 contains some news regarding John and Misun's move from Elgin Il to Denver Co. and thier marriage. The drawn stories in 62 depict incidents that the average person would gloss over during the day. But John is able to capture these seemingly insignificant moments in time with his cartooning, and share them them with those of us who don't take the time in our own lives to enjoy them. For instance in his four page wordless strip,"Trombones No.1" John asks the reader to "please read slowly"
In #63 more news, as John and his wife Misun decide to move from Denver to San Francisco.
Drawn stories in this issue include " The Bottle and Me" about John's bout with alcohol. " Barbers I have known" looking for that perfect barber, (always a difficult task). And "Mayfly Incident" a pesky bug gets in the house, and causes a somewhat sleepless night.
King-Cat Comics and Stories is a Small Press classic series, I suggest buying all the issues you can get.

Finally I have a new internet provider and the connection speed is 100% better. Hopefully now I can update this blog on a more regular basis.
I have received a number of comics recently so I do have a bit of a back log.
So let's start with the four latest issues of Chaos. This is one artist who consistently gets his issues out in a very timely manner. As I think I may have mentioned in an earlier review, these are what I would call true underground comics. The subjects go from politics, to sports, to the entertainment world. Nothing is safe from Dave Gilbert's wrath. The comics are jammed with words that in some cases block all but the top of the head and eyes of some of the characters. Yet many panels are fully rendered. Dave skillfully uses gray scaling to give his comics just the right feel.
All and all these are wild and fun for a mature audience, don't leave them around for your kids to pick up.
If you like sarcastic, timely humor, I suggest you subscribe to Chaos, Dave has proven that his issues will be out consistently on time.

DIAL UP PROBLEMS
The reason this blog is not updated as often as I would like is due to my home dial up connection.
I am not sure if my computer has a virus or the service is just bad.
I have written numerouse reviews only to have the connection lost, or a Microsoft error come up, or the the speed of the connection being so slow that I can't stand to wait for things to update.
So what I am going to do is post a list of new Small Press comics that I have received latley. I will post the title, page count, price, and purchase address. I will up date the list as I can, and hope that DSL will be available in my area soon. Watch for the list shortly.

HAPPY FREAK SHOW # 6

The cover says for mature readers, but I think that only means that young children just won't understand the humor. This issue comes out just in time to make a great Christmas gift. It includes one of the funniest versions of "The Night Before Christmas" that I have ever seen. If you are at all a fan of Will Elder you will get a kick out of all the little signs and things in the backgroud of each of the story panels.
To ad a little literary class to his small press comic, Jeff includes "A Page Torn Out of Hamlet" Something that I suppose Shakespear disgarded thinking it didn't work well in the story. WRONG!
Jeff proves it should have been left in!
Once again Jeff hits the mark with a very funny issue, be sure to send for a copy of this one before they are sold out!
